Reasons a BSN Should Be On Your Radar as a Georgia Nurse

Saturday, April 6, 2013 by Jerry Kelly

As an LPN, you don't have to choose between your career and furthering your education. We make it possible to work and earn your degree at the same time. You can begin today and move at your own pace, setting your study schedule around the things that are important to you.

You may have even encountered the long waiting lists that many people find themselves on before they can enter nursing school. The College Network has designed an online learning environment exclusively for LPN’s, and you can begin working toward your advanced nursing degree as soon as you're ready - there is no wait list.

Hospitals in Georgia have also started requiring that their registered nurses hold a BSN--especially those hospitals who are attempting to earn Magnet status. Holding your RN license used to be the accepted standard, but in keeping with the call for a more educated workforce, hospitals now are giving more consideration to those nurses with their bachelor's degree.

Hospitals in Georgia struggle to find bachelor's-prepared nurses and because of this, have developed policies to address the issue.  These hospitals will hire nurses with an Associate of Science in Nursing degree, but will require those nurses to obtain their bachelor's degree within a certain number of years.

At The College Network, we have options for you if you are either an LPN or an RN who would like obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

We partner with Indiana State University to offer the only online LPN to BSN program in the country.  This three-phase program allows you to work through your general education and prerequisite courses with The College Network and then enroll with Indiana State University for your nursing transition courses and final nursing courses with concurrent clinical hours. Courses are delivered online, and you can get started today.

The College Network has helped over 200,000 nurses begin working toward an advanced education! We can help you too! Getting started is simple. Just call me, Jerry Kelly at 404-217-6638 or go to www.collegenetwork.com/kelly to learn more about how you can reach your dream of earning your advanced nursing degree in the state of Georgia.

The Change in Educational Requirements is Sending Nurses Back to School

Monday, July 16, 2012 by Tracia Fernkas

If you are a nurse, you most likely have heard of the call by The Institute of Medicine that by the year 2020, 80% of nurses hold Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees.  It is a call to action for the nursing industry to respond to the changing needs of the healthcare system.

Hospitals have also started requiring their registered nurses hold a BSN--especially those hospitals who are attempting to be awarded Magnet status.  This change has happened in the last several years.  Holding your RN license used to be the accepted standard, but in keeping with the call for a more educated workforce, hospitals now are giving more consideration to those nurses with their bachelor's degree.

Hospitals struggle to find BSN nurses to hire and because of this have developed policies to address this.  These hospitals will hire nurses with an Associate of Science in Nursing degree, but will require those nurses to obtain their bachelor's degree within a certain number of years.

At The College Network, we have options for you if you are either an LPN or are an RN who would like obtain a Bachelor's degree in nursing.

We partner with Indiana State University to offer the only LPN-BSN online program.  This 3 phase program allows you to work through your general education and prerequisite courses with The College Network and then enroll with Indiana State for your nursing transition courses and final nursing courses with concurrent clinical hours.  Everything is online and there is no waiting list.  You can get started today.

For those registered nurses who are seeking their Bachelor's degree, you can obtain your degree through our partner, Regis University.  You can complete your upper-level core nursing courses in 12-20 months.  You can decide to work through a fast-track progression or a standard progression--depending on what works best with your busy lifestyle.

Call us today at 800-395-1014 to learn more about these programs and find out which one is the best fit for you. Your Bachelor's degree is waiting for you.

Mario Kart - Part II

Tuesday, April 10, 2012 by Kevin Burton

In my last blog post, I discussed the flexibility of our distance nursing programs where different kinds of people and learners are able to complete their degrees using the example of the Mario Kart video game series.  I'd like to continue using Mario Kart as a reference point to show how things you have already done, things we at The College Network can help you with, and things you can do to avoid obstacles in preventing you from finishing your degree program.

In Mario Kart, each character/kart can obtain different bonus items to help their cause in winning the race.  Some of these items are mushrooms (speed boost), turtles shells (wreck the opponent near you), banana peel (make someone spin out), and lightning bolts (shrink your competition).  Each of these can draw a parallel to helping you overcome obstacles in your program.

Mushrooms - a speed boost.  First off, with our Comprehensive Learning Modules, we streamline the test-out process, but we also offer other services to help as well.  Now, for certain prerequisite and general education classes, we offer online testing via a webcam proctor service to help you schedule and complete courses much quicker than a traditional testing center.  Also, by financing your exam fees with the rest of your learning modules, you do not have to wait to budget out test costs, we've done that for you!

Lightning Bolts - shrink the competition.  For those of you that have previous college credit, the good news is that it will most likely transfer in to the program if it is from a regionally accredited school.  By transferring in those credits, you can shrink the size of your program, and save time and money!

Turtle Shells - knock out the competition.  Each of our learning modules arms you with a turtle shell to knock out the opponent (the courses you need).  We guarantee you will pass each exam by using our modules, so whenever you shoot a turtle shell, it will be like a red one that finds the nearest competitor to knock them off.  Use the practice exams in the modules to help make sure you are prepared for your actual exams at the testing center or in the online webcam tests.  All in all, the modules will lead the way to finish your program and each one is a turtle shell to knock off your competition along the way!

Banana Peels - in case you slip.  Banana peels are notorious for being slippery, and the same is true in Mario Kart.  In life, and in these programs it is easy to fall behind, or slip up every once in awhile.  This is why we offer our Academic Support team to help you stay on track.  They are there to help you with curriculum questions, scheduling exams, obtaining exam fee checks, navigating the online resource center, and making sure you properly enroll and complete your top online nursing programs with one of the schools we partner with or recommend.

We at The College Network enjoy serving you to help you complete your education and lifelong goals.  Mario Kart is a great game on all platforms of Nintendo video game systems, and although it may not be the first thing you think of when completing your education, maybe now you can see the parallels between your education and having fun with a game.  So go out, run your race, complete your program, and come away in 1st place!

As always, feel free to contact us with any questions or needs.  Have a great day!

Where We End Up

Saturday, January 28, 2012 by Bryan Curtis
I had a recent discussion with a friend of mine who I swam with in college. During his undergraduate program, he was an exemplary Biology major who devoted all of his time before and after practice to studying. His goal was to do well enough to get accepted to a local Dentistry doctoral program. Despite good grades and great test scores, he was not accepted into the program and was left in a sort of limbo, unsure of what to do with his life since his four-year goal had been denied.

He told me that he took some time off to re-evaluate his situation when his sister, who was a year younger than him, suggested a local nursing program that she was enrolled in. His life was in idle, so he figured it was worth a shot if it meant getting him out of his current situation. He took one class and shadowed a local nurse and he said, "I found my calling." He said it didn't have all of the glamour and prestige of a doctorate, but he couldn't imagine a more challenging/rewarding career. He just recently graduated from his nursing program and is now studying for the NCLEX exam.

If you're like my friend and are searching for a rewarding career in the field of nursing, The College Network can help you on your way to earning that degree. If you just need nursing school prerequisites or are interested in an online degree program, visit TCN's web site.

Ironman Bachelors Degree

Wednesday, November 23, 2011 by Kevin Burton
Many of you have heard of the Ironman competition.  It consists of a 3 part test of endurance, competition, and will power.  The 3 legs of the Ironman competition, consisting of a swim, bike ride, and marathon made me think of how the LPN/Paramedic to BS in Nursing through The College Network and Indiana State University is its own test of endurance and will power.

Below is a recap of how the Online LPN to BS in Nursing works, and its Ironman equivalent.

Stage 1 - The SwimPhase I – The College Network (Ironman Equivalent = 2.4 Mile Swim)

  •  Study The College Network’s Comprehensive Learning Modules and complete end-of-course equivalency exams to earn credit for your prerequisite and nursing courses (link to program brochure)
  •  Experience learning entirely online in our Online Resource Center (link to the ORC demo) which is designed to uniquely compliment various learning styles
  • Work at your own pace  (If you can commit to studying an average of one hour per day, you can expect to test out of a course once every 3-6 weeks)
  •  Succeed with The College Network. We guarantee you will pass each exam and offer academic support via phone, email, and online chat 5 days a week
  •  Take your exams online from the comfort of your home.

Stage 2 - The Bike RidePhase II – Complete 4 Customized Study Modules (Ironman Equivalent = 112 Mile Bike Ride)

  • Apply and enroll into Indiana State University
  • Study the 4 College Network Customized Study Modules (CSMs) to test out of those 4 courses
  • Take and pass your 4 CSM Exams Online Directly Through Indiana State

Stage 3 - The MarathonPhase III – Indiana State University and Clinicals (Ironman Equivalent = 26.2 Mile Run (aka a marathon)

  • Apply to the Indiana State Nursing School
  • Complete 12 remaining nursing courses through Indiana State online
  • All remaining courses are online, asynchronous, and based on 16 week semesters with summers off
  • Complete your clinical hours with a preceptor at a local facility
  • Graduate with your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Indiana State University
    • Average completion time for your BSN degree is 3-5 years (Phases I and II are self-paced, whereas Phase III is not)
  • Prepare for your state RN boards with The College Network “Rx for NCLEX Success” (link to more info) developed in partnership with the National League for Nursing
  • Become an RN and earn up to $20,000 more annually!
So what are you waiting for?  Would you rather compete in the Ironman competition, or get going on your online nursing degree?  Either way, let me know, and I'll be happy to help you get started (at least on the nursing program)!

Hospitals in Ohio are looking for BSN's

Sunday, August 28, 2011 by Cory Eyler

In a recent article published in the Middletown Journal it was announced that Miami University which is one of Ohio's top nursing programs is ending its two year nursing degree programs to concentrate on four year and bachelor's degree completion programs.  This is big news considering the fact that Miami University reportedly provides many nurses to surrounding hospitals such as McCullough Hyde in Oxford, Atrium Medical Center in Middletown and The Fort Hamilton Hospital.

This change is also going to impact an existing problem with waiting lists due to the limited number of NLNAC accredited universities with online nursing programs.

"The shift has implications for the region and the state’s most popular type of higher education that enrolled nearly 30,000 students in 2009, according to the most recent Ohio Board of Nursing data.

The demand for all types of nurses is expected to grow in coming years as older professionals begin to retire while new students often face waiting lists of up to two years because of a shortage of educators and clinical training sites."

The good news is that there are options for nurses in Ohio and everywhere even those with minimal nursing school prerequisites.  The College Network partners with leading universities to provide nursing education programs that can be completed entirely through distance learning. Best of all, The College Networks programs are designed for busy nurses looking for flexible nursing education with no waiting lists.

The Art of Nursing

Wednesday, August 17, 2011 by Charles Fox
Image from blog.onwardhealthcare.com"Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter's or sculptor's work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God's spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts."

Nurses and artists certainly do their commonalities---they nurture us in various ways and remind us of the beauty inherent in humanity.  To shape someone's physical well being takes personality, care, adaptability, knowledge creativity and skill, as does shaping a mound of clay into a beautiful sculpture.

Our high-quality, convenient and affordable Nursing School Prerequisites, NLNAC Accredited Distance Nursing Programs and Advanced Nursing Education are testament to our appreciation of nurses here at The College Network. We understand that higher education online is becoming the best route for many nurses to sharpen their skills to the highest level and master the art of patient care---and we are here for you.  College Network Support includes our dedicated Program Advisors, Appointment Setters, and the Academic Support team.  Together, we are here to show you that we care about the art of nursing, and we believe that you have what it takes to create a masterpiece through your career.

Registered Nurse - Anne Bedoe

Friday, April 29, 2011 by College Network
Anne BedoeI was in seventh grade when I knew I was going into the Medical field. When I volunteered at a Nursing Home, a few of the "older people," told me , "You will make a very good nurse someday."

As I studied physiology and became intrigued by the human body and disease process, I was determined to meet the goal of nursing. I also had opportunities in Girl Scouts to work as camp counselor for children and became a lifeguard. I had to learn BLS and apply what I learned on the pool deck. This of course, strengthened my pursuit into the field.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck my family, leaving us distraught and without funds for education. My father passed away with pancreatic cancer; diagnosed two weeks before he died. I had to put school on hold.

I met my husband, got married and had children. After my fourth child was born, I told my husband that I wanted to return to school for nursing. This was twelve years later. It took another five years to get through prerequisites and the program. In the middle of this program, my son had to have a craniotomy to help with intractable seizures.

I am now a Pediatric Nurse at Children's Hospital, Los Angeles. I am grateful to this hospital, doctors and my manager for so many reasons. Not only has this place saved my son's life many times, they have also been supportive through my journey as a mother with a chronically ill child. Happy tears come to my eyes with dedication and love for a place our family has called a second home.

I became a pediatric nurse in 1997, and it has been a constant learning experience with intense knowledge. I am so fortunate to have experienced my nursing career at CHLA. To all those who want to study Nursing, find a mentor and stick to your goals. I am now having thoughts of furthering my education in nursing. Hopefully, within the next year I will start an online program.

Best Wishes to all student nurses and nurses advancing their education. It is a wonderful profession!

"I came, I saw, I conquered" are the words that Jim from Kyle, Texas uttered to me last Monday after I helped him begin working on his LVN to RN program. These words were uttered by Julius Caesar in 47 BC.  Jim's motive for earning his RN were out of the ordinary.

Jim wants to create a legacy for himself, and give back to the community.  He knows that getting his RN is a lot of work, but he is ready to conquer this challenge.  He is a former Marine, and is used to challenges.  He knows what it will take, and is ready to get down to business!

He was looking for inexpensive nursing degrees that would fit into his lifestyle, and came across the LVN to ADN program where he could also complete his nursing prerequisites online.  Jim had looked into other distance nursing programs, but also wanted something where he wouldn't have to deal with the pitfalls of a classroom-based education.  He was impressed with The College Network support, and is now embarking on his next mission on his quest to become Nurse Practitioner.  Good luck Jim!

If I can do it, so can you!

I have recently started working on Anatomy and Physiology through The College Network's Comprehensive Learning Modules. I have to say that I am off to a fantastic start. I have completed five chapters in four days. After years of seeing countless people using The College Network's materials, taking one final exam AND PASSING, I realized that I can do this as well.

I have a busy life. Children, after school activities, a beautiful wife and numerous other duties boil down to very little time left in the day. I definitely do not have time to drive to the local Broward College, sit in class for an hour or so, do homework, take quizzes, and then finally drive back home. That entire process takes a couple of hours a day, at a minimum. I would much rather  use that same allotted time, study the modules, take one test, and receive the same credit hours as someone who attended 12-15 weeks sitting in a classroom.

If I can take Anatomy and Physiology, YOU can start doing your nursing prerequisites or a distance nursing program. There a plenty of options for you through The College Network. There is an LPN to BSN option. There is a Paramedic to RN option. You can also pursue your MSN in the accelerated format.

If I can do it, so can YOU!

Excelsior College in Florida...Update!

Thursday, September 2, 2010 by James Jaus
Excelsior College is in full force in the state of Florida. Wow, Governor Charlie Christ recently signed HB 1337 into law. This law makes it possible for LPN's AND PARAMEDICS (incuding Naval Corpsmen and Army Medics) to enroll and recieve an Associate Degree in Nursing from Excelsior College.

This is a drastic change to the "old" policy the Florida Board of Nursing was implementing. Before, LPN's had to apply and recieve a license from another state and then apply  to Florida for endorsment in order to recieve their license. This is no longer my friends.

Also, paramedics had to complete the program and then work out of state for TWO years. Then and only then could they apply for endorsement. Again, this is only a memory.

Needless to say, I have been overwelmed with questions about The College Network, Distance Nursing Programs, and completing prerequisites online.

All I can say is that with the combination of inexpensive nursing degrees that are offered completely online and through distance learning, The College Network offers everything could possibly need when it comes to nursing.

Nursing education never sleeps!

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 by John Smilanich
Seven years ago, I started working as a program advisor for The College Network, an organization that helps working adults earn college degrees.

Since the majority of my time is spent with health care clients, I am constantly talking to nurses and administrators about the challenges they have with continuing their education.

This past week I spent 16 straight hours at a hospital in New York. On purpose! By arriving at 4:00 in the morning and leaving after 8:00 at night, I was able to catch nurses and health care workers in their natural work environment.

The stories that I hear from health care professionals are often similar. They are working crazy shifts - either they are very long shifts or they are evening or night shifts that totally disrupt their schedules. These people have families that they want to spend time with. There are countless soccer games or band concerts or other activities that conflict with work schedules. How is a working adult (especially one with a family) supposed to go back to school?

Historically, this type of professional had to quit a job to go to school full time, or to go part time they had to work fewer hours or attend night school. With the advent of the Internet, online learning has become very popular with health care workers. Many more nurses are able to attend distance learning programs because they can be more flexibility and student-friendly than traditional classroom based programs.

Many of the questions I get from students in the health care field revolve around time. "How much time will it take me to earn my degree?" When you participate in a distance learning program, there are many options. The reason I chose to work for The College Network is that we provide a program that has a self-paced option. I never call it a self-study program because my company has academic support available over 60 hours per week.

As an example, I talk to dozens of students every week looking for distance nursing programs. Many of them completed an LPN program at a vocational or technical school where they earned a certificate but no college credit. By working with each of them individually, I can help them determine which pre-requisite courses they need, how they can complete their nursing pre-requisites online, and give them specific answers on costs.

Referring back to the "time" question, I can't give them a specific answer. The reason is that our program is self-paced. Some students are able to devote more time per week than other students. Some students have to work extra shifts, choose to attend a few more soccer games, or have to spend more time with a sick child. The important point I make to my student is that this program is personal and the time commitment is up to them.

I am also careful to make the point that the program doesn't run on its' own! It takes human interaction for learning to take place. No program is easy and degrees are not free! They take time and energy to earn.

If you are someone looking at online courses for nursing or for any other health care profession, look at the options. If self-paced learning is of any interest to you, take a look at The College Network. We may not be the right choice for every type of learner, but we are an excellent choice for many. If you are a self-motivated, goal-oriented student, I'd sure like to talk to you!

Associates Degrees in Nursing Online Accelerate Your Career

Tuesday, July 13, 2010 by The College Network Web Team
If you’re ready to advance your career in nursing and you’re looking to move forward to your RN, getting your associate degree is a great next step. Online courses can be an ideal way to help you finish your degree faster and make it more affordable.

Online nursing programs combine course work with hands-on training to provide you with the knowledge and experience you need to achieve your goals. Your associate degree in nursing also prepares you for completing your bachelor's degree in nursing and, with more experience, continue on to a wide variety of specializations.

You’ll appreciate the convenience of online degrees for nursing if you’re working full time or have family commitments. Most courses follow a flexible schedule that you can work around your busy lifestyle. You don’t have to concern yourself with commuting to campus or juggling your other responsibilities to get to class on time. You’ll still need to have in-class time to master the skills you use on the job but that requirement will be much easier to fulfill.

Nursing degrees online also help you avoid the long waiting lists to get into good nursing schools. Because of the shortage of nurse educators, many programs have put their courses online to help lessen the time and cost of getting a nursing degree. In the long run, this also reduces the growing shortage of nurses in our hospitals, clinics and laboratories. By getting your associate degree online, you become part of the solution.

Another advantageous way to reduce your time and cost is to take college equivalency exams for some of your academic coursework. You can “test out” of certain prerequisite or general education classes and other specially-designed courses set up by the program. Your study materials are made available through services, such as The College Network, that specialize in preparing students for these tests. When you pass the exam, your course credits are transferred to your college.

To learn more about completing your associate’s degree in nursing online and other degree programs, visit the nursing page of The College Network.

Online Nursing Coursework

Monday, June 14, 2010 by The College Network Web Team

Nurses are an essential part of the health care industry. There is generally a misconception that nurses work only in hospitals. But nothing can be further from the truth as there is a great demand for qualified and registered nurses across various sectors.  A vast majority of nurses are working in sectors other than the hospital and there are various career options available.

The Internet has enabled LPNs who wish to continue with their education, an easy option of doing the BSN programs online. Getting a nursing degree has become much easier due to the online programs available. These online programs are an inexpensive way to get nursing degrees compared to the traditional method.

What are nursing prerequisites online? The basic requirement for applying for an advanced nursing degree online is completion of a high school diploma and a LPN or a LVN program. You can then choose to do ADN nursing degree (Associate Degree Program in nursing) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.

The online nursing coursework, which is similar to a conventional degree, includes physiology, pharmacology, anatomy, nutrition, emergency treatment and patient care techniques. The curriculum is the same for online and the traditional degrees.  Online nursing courses are ideal for people who are already working as nurses and would like to continue their education to improve their career prospects.

Online Degrees for Nursing Fast Track Your Career

Wednesday, June 9, 2010 by The College Network Web Team
Online Nursing Programs from The College NetworkIf you’re ready to jump start your career and begin your nursing education, online courses provide a convenient way to accelerate your coursework and complete your degree as quickly as possible. No matter where you want to work, what you want to specialize in or how busy your schedule is, there’s an online program that works for you.

Online programs combine academic course work with hands-on training for a continuing series of diplomas, including associate’s and bachelor’s degrees for LPNs/LVNs, RNs and paramedics, Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees, and master’s programs for advanced nursing professions. Whatever your interests, online degrees for nursing provide courses for all kinds of specializations and degrees.

The current nursing shortage allows nurses to go as far as they desire when they have the right combination of education and experience. Online nursing education programs provide you with the necessary credentials to move into positions of greater responsibility and to earn a larger salary.

Fortunately, online programs lessen the time it takes to get a degree and reduce the cost. In addition, college equivalency exams allow you to “test out” of some prerequisite and general education courses for even greater savings. The College Network provides you with study materials to pass end-of-course exams and then transfer your credits to participating colleges.
