Leveraging the Power of Lean Six Sigma for Business

Monday, January 7, 2013 by Rachel Hollingsworth

With a new fiscal year underway, it’s no surprise that companies everywhere are looking for ways to cut costs and increase the efficiency of their business flow. The project completion process is often fraught with errors, causing thousands of dollars in lost revenue for businesses of all kinds. In fact, according to the Project Management Institute:

  • 88% of planned projects are past deadline, over budget, or both.
  • The average cost of overrun on a project is 189%.
  • 31% of projects are cancelled before completion.

For companies with a small budget to spend on employee education, enrolling several project managers in a Lean Six Sigma certificate program could be a good solution.

With foundations in statistical engineering, the Lean Six Sigma concept is a data-driven methodology aimed at eliminating process variation to improve production results. Lean Six Sigma programs typically come in three levels of certification based on a candidate’s level of prior experience: Green Belt, Advanced Lean, and Black Belt.  Each program teaches specific skills for streamlining business methods and lowering the occurrence of defects within standard practices. Implementing Six Sigma processes in project strategies can vastly improve operational performance, reduce day-to-day costs and produce measurable financial results over time.

  • Companies using Lean Six Sigma to streamline projects typically earn 1.2%4.5% of their annual revenue back in savings.
  • The average annual salary for a Green Belt-certified professional is $90K annually.
  • Companies with a Black Belt certified employee typically save $250K to $500K on average per project.

If you think you might be interested in pursuing a Lean Six certificate, one of the Program Advisors here at The College Network would be happy to answer any questions you might have about these programs. Feel free to give us a call at 800-395-1014—we’re here to get you informed!

Learn to be Efficient

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 by Bryan Curtis
In recent times, companies and consumers have been trying to find ways to accomplish tasks more efficiently - saving on the amount of time and money invested. Consumers can do this by paying attention to sales, clipping coupons, price-shopping online, but how do companies figure out how to cut costs in order to increase profits?

One method used by many companies is enrolling employees in a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program. The Green Belt program focuses on how to eliminate waste, improve the quality of products, and increase customer satisfaction. Recently, it has become an invaluable asset to add to any resume since many companies are restructuring in order to acclimate to the current economy climate.

If you're interested in improving your resume with an asset that showcases your ability to efficiently improve a company's production, visit The College Network for information regarding the Purdue Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program. Purdue's comprehensive program includes reading; watching video lectures via the Internet (available via streaming video, 24/7 throughout the 10 weeks of the course); participating in asynchronous online discussions; taking online quizzes and a final exam; and completing assignments related to the course case study. You will also have the opportunity for coaching via email and phone by your instructor.

A quote by the basketball coach Pat Riley sums it all up, "A particular shot or way of moving the ball can be a player's personal signature, but efficiency of performance is what wins the game for the team." Visit TCN's web site to learn more about becoming lean six sigma certified.

Purdue Lean Six Sigma FAQs

Thursday, January 26, 2012 by Kevin Burton
At The College Network, we pride ourselves on offering the finest self-paced education and training possible.  Here is a quick look at the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program available through Purdue University.  Enjoy!

Do I have to list this as an online program on my resume?

On your resume, you would list this program as the Purdue Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.  You do not have to indicate it was online.

Are there start dates for the Green Belt courses and if so, when are they?
The Green Belt class has specific enrollment dates because you have an actual live instructor that is available via email and phone correspondence.  Lean Six Sigma Green Belt courses start the first Wednesday of each month.

Is this program just your Green Belt, or do you offer a Black Belt as well?

The Green Belt course, and the Advanced Lean Principles & Tools course are both prerequisites to be eligible to take the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt course through Purdue.  The full 3 course program is designed to help you achieve your certificate AND certification as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, Advanced Lean, and Black Belt.

How does Lean Six Sigma differ from just Six Sigma?

Lean Six Sigma is similar to Six Sigma, but encompasses the Lean Methodology in its principles.  Honestly, straight Six Sigma classes are going to be very similar to the Lean Six Sigma courses, but Purdue feels it is best to do a combination to achieve the best results within any project or process.

Do I need to be in any specific industry to take this program?

The good news with the Purdue's Lean Six Sigma program is that it is not specific to any one field.  These principles can be used in any project or process that you are trying to improve (Lean is designed to streamline production and eliminate waste, and Six Sigma will focus on improving overall quality through statistical analysis among other methods).  Course participants vary sometimes significantly with what field they are in, from an engineering, logistics, or healthcare background to finance, sales, and even marketing.  The end goal of all 3 courses is to give you the certification, and most importantly, knowledge you need to successfully go out and use these principles immediately to complete Green Belt/Advanced Lean/Black Belt level projects or processes.

If you have any other questions or would like to explore enrolling into the Purdue Lean Six Sigma program, please let us know and we'll be happy to help!

Back on Track in 2012

Monday, January 9, 2012 by Kevin Burton
Boiler Up!Ah, the New Year is such a refreshing time to "start over" and refocus on those things that you need to accomplish.  For myself, I have been lacking in communicating with folks who follow The College Network via our blog, Facebook, and on Twitter.  With the New Year in full swing, I am making a new-found effort to make sure I update potential students and customers on happenings and observations from our company, and how they can help you into the New Year as well.

To play on the Purdue Boilermaker train emblem, I'd like to offer my "Back on Track" message here for 2012 (yes, pun intended).  The Purdue Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, Advanced Lean, and Black Belt programs have never been more popular, and certainly are helping people learn new skills and boost their resumes in the necessary manner to achieve and succeed in the job market today.  If you are in any type of project or process improvement area, in any field, and want to earn a certification and learn the tools to successfully improve quality and eliminate waste within your project or process, there is no better program than the online Lean Six Sigma certifications through Purdue.

It's 2012, Do You know Where Your Resolutions Are?

Friday, December 30, 2011 by Tracia Fernkas
I hesitate to bring this subject up--but we're all thinking about it.  It's time for our New Year's resolutions.  I know, groan, groan, groan.  But, it really does give us a great opportunity to take a hard look at our lives and see what is working for us and what isn't.  You can think of it as cleaning house, starting with a clean slate or a resolution.  Resolutions somehow seem more daunting to me, so I prefer to think of it as cleaning house.
New Year 2012
In 2011, we had thousands of people sign up with The College Network to compelte a program with one of our partner universities.  That means these people made the decision to move foward in their careers by advancing their education.  The majority of people we work with are nurses who want to earn their Associate Degree in Nursing.  They are LPNs who want to become RNs to face new challenges. We also work with RNs pursuing their Bachelor or Master of Science in Nursing.

Included in that number are those professionals who also earned their Lean Six Sigma certificate.  We offer green belt and black belt certification through Purdue University.  Also, there are Project Managers who became experts in their field by obtaining their project management certification.  And not to be forgotten, those that received their paralegal certificate from Boston University.

So, it's soon to be 2012.  What changes are you going to make?  Let me tell you an easy first step if you are considering your next career move.  Call us at 800 39-LEARN.  We can give you the information you need to make a change.

High Demand - Purdue University Lean Six Sigma

Monday, September 12, 2011 by Kevin Burton
Lately, there has been an overwhelming demand for the Purdue University Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, Advanced Lean, and Black Belt Programs.  Program Advisors at The College Network, like myself, have been enrolling students months in advance of start dates, and every class fills to capacity.

What is Lean Six Sigma, and how can it help your day-to-day responsibilities?

Lean Six Sigma is the combination of the Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to help improve any project or process.  Lean is designed to help streamline production and eliminate waste within any project or process (or, do things faster).  Six Sigma is designed to improve overall quality within any project or process (or, do things better).  So, essentially, if you are looking to do things better and faster, Lean Six Sigma can help you achieve that.

So if you are curious or have heard of the ever growing standard of Lean Six Sigma, and would like to earn your certificate and certification from world-renowned Purdue University, please give us a call and we at The College Network will be happy to provide you the online education that can help your career !

What exactly is Lean Six Sigma?

Thursday, August 4, 2011 by Tracia Fernkas
Do you know what Lean Six Sigma is?  I recently had a friend tell me she would be out of town for a week in Lean Six Sigma training and was working to become a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.  After the lengthy explanation she gave me about what it was and why it would radically benefit her; I decided that I would find out more about it.

Lean Six Sigma combines Six Sigma, a management driven, scientific methodology for product and process improvement which creates breakthroughs in financial performance and customer satisfaction, with Lean, that focuses on eliminating waste, streamlining processes. and creating a better product.   These two methodologies together will build a stronger product by making the production process faster and more flexible while improving quality.

The main points of Lean Six Sigma are to define, measure, analyze, improve and control. You will often see this abbreviated to DMAIC.  The chart below illustrates these points.

lean six sigma integration into DMAIC

How is this relevant to you?  The fact is, more and more companies are requiring their employees to be at least a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.  Maybe your company is considering whether to move in this direction or you would like to expand your skill set.  The College Network partners with Purdue University to provide an online certification in Lean Six Sigma. It is specifically designed to fit your busy schedule.

Beyond the Numbers

Thursday, October 14, 2010 by Stefanie Kinsey

PurposeBusiness intelligence is, by its very nature, dynamic; ever changing; and fast paced. A hybrid between teaching and forensics - my job provides the truth in a world of chaos and urgency. The data drives falsehood and lies from business decisions and provides the team the guidance needed to accomplish purpose.  Business Intelligence allows managers to see things more clearly.  In fact, the goal of Business Intelligence is to illustrate the picture so clearly that the picture is more than what it was originally.

The College Network is more than just a resource to online degrees from leading universities.  Just as the picture to the left is more than a couple enjoy a view of a lake.  We are a team of adults like you who want more.  We believe there is more to education than just books.  We believe eduction should be inspired by life and integrated into our lives, whatever the circumstances!  We strive and push one another to:

  • Make a difference
  • Challenge the routine
  • Have an impact

I encourage you to view the College Network Reviews.  You will find there are lots of educational opportunities.  Some like Associate Degree in Nursing ADN, Online Paramedic to RN Program, accelerated RN to BSN, MS in Nursing Management, Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and PMP Preparation course, but if you look through the surface, I hope you will see more than educational opportunities.

Some would say the purpose of Business Intelligence is to provide information as to what has been accomplished and how we are doing; key performance indicators.  Business Intelligence is so much more.  The goal is to use the data and information to go beyond the numbers.  Business Intelligence is clearly painting the picture so the future can be predicted.  The College Network is more than an educational services company.  The College Network is your team and support to finding a new life through education.

Back To The Future ----->

Tuesday, October 5, 2010 by Lawrence Bowlin
Imagine for a moment that in your driveway you have a time machine.  Let's say a DeLorean and you are going to play the part of Marty McFly.  You have the ability to load the plutonium into the machine, and set your Flux Capacitor to anytime in the past.  Where would you go?  Would you go back and change decisions you've made?  Correct mistakes or leave them as they are?  For me personally, I would go back and tell myself that mullets are NOT the next great hair style and parachute pants are just a fad!

Now let's put this question into the context of your career.  Would you follow the same path or would you change it?  A person once quoted "if you do something you love, you'll never work a day in your life".  Does your career fulfill you emotionally, financially and even spiritually?  Do you get that sense of satisfaction each morning knowing you are going to work in a career that you love?  Take a moment, and do your own personal "career inventory" and ask yourself that very question.  "Am I happy?"  If your answer is no, what's holding you back?  The answer is simple.  You are the culprit.  You are holding you back.

Everyday I talk to people who have done their own "inventory" and want to change the future by working in the present.  Project Managers who see the increasing need for the PMP credential and want to enroll in a 100% online, self -paced Certificate of Project Management program and take advantage of PMP Preparation Courses.

People stuck in unfulfilling menial jobs, who see the value of the online Paralegal Certificate program from Boston University.  In 14 weeks, they can completely change their lives.

Or those people who see what an education in Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Lean Six Sigma Black Belt from Purdue University can do for their resume and marketable skills.

How about a certificate from an Ivy League institution like eCornell in Human Resources or Business Leadership?

LPNs / LVNs who want to earn more money by working for their Associates Degree or Bachelors Degree in Nursing Online.  And the beauty of it all is you do all this without getting into your Time Machine, but do it from home right now.  Online degrees from leading universities in the comfort of home.

Who needs the DeLorean?  You only need desire to get moving.  Call me and I'll show you how to get up to 88 m.p.h and generate that 1.21 gigawatts to have YOUR future now with The College Network.

How Has Health Care Changed Already?

Monday, September 27, 2010 by College Network
Since the Affordable Care Act was passed in March of this year there have already been several changes that have taken place. Last week I talked about changes that went into effect on September 23. Here is the list of changes that had already been made since the law was passed.

January 1, 2010: Providing Small Business Health Insurance Tax Credits. Up to 4 million small businesses are eligible for tax credits to help them provide insurance benefits to their workers. The first phase of this provision provides a credit worth up to 35% of the employer’s contribution to the employees’ health insurance. Small non-profit organizations may receive up to a 25% credit.

April 1, 2010: Allowing States to Cover More People on Medicaid. States will be able to receive federal matching funds for covering some additional low-income individuals and families under Medicaid for whom federal funds were not previously available. This will make it easier for states that choose to do so to cover more of their residents.

June, 2010: Relief for Four Million Seniors Who Hit the Medicare Prescription Drug "Donut Hole". An estimated 4 million seniors will reach the gap in Medicare prescription drug coverage known as the “donut hole” this year. Each senior will receive a $250 rebate.

Effective Now: Cracking Down on Health Care Fraud. Current efforts to fight fraud have returned more than $2.5 billion to the Medicare Trust Fund in FY 2009 alone. The new law invests new resources and requires new screening procedures for health care providers to boost these efforts and reduce fraud and waste in Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP.

June 1, 2010: Expanding Coverage for Early Retirees. Too often, Americans who retire without employer-sponsored insurance and before they are eligible for Medicare see their life savings disappear because of high rates in the individual market. To preserve employer coverage for early retirees until more affordable coverage is available through the new Exchanges by 2014, the new law creates a $5 billion program to provide needed financial help for employment-based plans to continue to provide valuable coverage to people who retire between the ages of 55 and 65, as well as their spouses and dependents. For more information on the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program, visit www.ERRP.gov

July 1, 2010: Providing Access to Insurance for Uninsured Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions. A Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan will provide new coverage options to individuals who have been uninsured for at least six months because of a pre-existing condition. States have the option of running this new program in their state. If a state chooses not to do so, a plan will be established by the Department of Health and Human Services in that state. This program serves as a bridge to 2014, when all discrimination against pre-existing conditions will be prohibited. Learn more about the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan.

July 1, 2010: Putting Information Online. The law provides for an easy-to-use website where consumers can compare health insurance coverage options and pick the coverage that works for them.

Hokey Pokey

Thursday, September 23, 2010 by Kevin Burton
"You put your right foot in, you take your right foot out,
You put your right foot in and you shake it all about.
You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about!"

Silly as it may be, the hokey-pokey song and dance can teach us about how furthering your education can help your career and life.  Let's examine how you can take this song to heart and accompany it with education from The College Network and turn yourself around!

"You put your right foot in, you take your right foot out."   Many students I work with everyday are looking to improve their current situation.  Some by necessity, some by choice, have taken their right foot out (of the door) and are unemployed or underemployed and are looking to get their foot in (the door) once again.

"You put your right foot in, and you shake it all about."   What can you do to put your right foot in the door again?  Continue and update your education.  Obtaining your Paralegal Studies Certificate from Boston University, PMP Preparation Courses from Boston University Corporate Education Center or Lean Six Sigma Green Belt from Purdue University are great ways to help get your foot back in (the door) again.  Once you get your foot in (the door), its up to you to shake it all about - show off your worth, previous skills and experience, and your newly updated resume with The College Network education!

"You do the hokey-pokey and you turn yourself around."   Now that you've got your swagger back, and you've got your foot in (the door) and you've shaken it all about - it's time to work hard and have fun in your newly found job or career (or even putting your new skills to work in your current job).  Do the hokey-pokey, and you truly can turn yourself around!

Continuing your education from The College Network - "That's what it's all about!"

Student with Two Certifications Earns Third in Project Management

Wednesday, September 22, 2010 by College Network

Shawn Camp knows a thing or two about becoming certified in his field. He already has his Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and his Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) certificates. “I have a bachelor’s in computer information,” Shawn said. “I wanted to earn my Certificate in Project Management because that certification places you in the middle of everything that a corporation wants in an employee.”

Because he’s originally from Boston, Mass., Shawn found the opportunity to earn his Project Management Certificate from Boston University Corporate Education Center very enticing. The fact that he could earn the certificate completely online also caught his interest. “The nearest school to me that offers this program is four hours away. Online education was just a much better option for me in this case,” Shawn said.

With all the education that Shawn continues to accumulate, he hopes to one day be a network administrator or to be able to run his own computer firm. “I’m really excited to just get this experience and move on from there. I want to see where it takes me,” he said. “This certificate shows your willingness to learn, your ability to take on more responsibilities, adds more weight to your resume and, in some cases, even gets your foot in the door.”

Coming from a technology background, Shawn knows the importance of keeping up with trends in today’s highly technical world. “Technology changes every six months,” Shawn said. “If you can keep up with everything that’s changing in today’s world, you’ll be all the more valuable to employers.”

Jeff Probst of SurvivorImmunity is back up for grabs!  Just like on the hit reality TV show Survivor you too have a chance at achieving something to help save yourself from elimination.  The College Network offers you lots of options to help yourself rise to the top of whatever "game" (career path) you are in.

When to procrastinate...

Wednesday, September 22, 2010 by Matthew Pinkston

It sounds funny to even say, but can procrastination be a good thing?  We are all guilty of it.  I have a car at home right now that is about three months past due for a cleaning.  My two kids with their sticky little hands, french fries in between the seats... if you have kids you know exactly what I am talking about.

Now putting off cleaning out my car will not make that much of a difference as long as I can see out of the windows and the car gets me where I need to go.  But what if I put off changing my oil?  Or getting my tires rotated?  Putting those things off can have major consequences.

The moral of the story is to be selective about what you procrastinate.  If I do not change my oil regularly, my car could cease up, costing me a lot of time and money.

If I put off going back to school, I am taking away opportunities and earning potential!

Putting off watching your favorite TV program will not affect you like putting off earning a Paralegal Certificate to better yourself and start a new career.  Or getting that Lean Six Sigma Green Belt from Purdue University that will finally allow you advance your career.  Whatever the case may be, I understand that going back to school is not as entertaining as watching your favorite program, but that is what a DVR is for.  Keep in mind that the longer you wait to do those things that can change your life for the better, the more likely you may never get around to getting them done.  Ask yourself, "Can I dedicate myself for just the next 10 weeks to change the rest of my life"?

Put down that remote, let the car stay dirty for one more week, and give me a call or send me an email for more information on continuing your education online!

Here’s something to cheer about. According to a survey released Monday by the Wall Street Journal, Purdue University students are better suited to enter the workforce than students from most other colleges. Let’s face it; we all want to be associated with the best.

In the survey’s specialty rankings, Purdue was ranked first in management information systems and second in engineering.  Companies are looking for candidates who have the whole package; a solid work ethic, strong leadership skills, real-world experience and a credential from a recognized educational leader

As an adult and a consumer, we are always looking for the best value at a good price.  Purdue University offers online educational programs in Lean Six Sigma methodologies delivered in a convenient online program. After working all day, the last thing you want to do is drive to a campus, look for parking, sit in a classroom and then come home and do homework. It’s good to know you can add a quality credential to your resume without sacrificing your family and your priorities. The Purdue University Lean Six Sigma online program allows you to progress to Black Belt and receive your certification from a recognized educational leader.

When your resume shows you’ve earned your Six Sigma certification through Purdue University, you can count on your skills accelerating your career. Who’s number one…..you’re number one!!!
