I would like to share the following list by Eric Bloom, President and Founder of Manager Mechanics, of his top 10 reasons to become a PMP. What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

Thursday, December 22, 2011 by Kevin Burton
As we approach the holiday season that brings gifts to many of us, it always reminds me of that spirit I get around this time of year.  It brings out the kid in me, and thinking of all those toys from the past takes me back to my childhood.  So, I'd like to ask you a question: What did you want to be when you grew up?

AstronautI remember watching movies like Star Wars, and growing up like a kid with my head in the clouds.  I guess you can say I was your typical boy that dreamt of being an astronaut.  Of course those days have since faded away, but I think to myself now and then, "What if...?"  After thinking about "What If?" I realized that my time and your time has not passed you by.  You can still change your life to point it in the direction that you want(ed) to go.  Instead of asking what you wanted to be when you grew up, I'm now asking what do you want to be WHEN you grow up?

NurseThe College Network can make these dreams possible.  We have higher education online from our partner universities in the form of professional certificates and degree seeking programs.  So if you wanted to be a lawyer, you can pursue the Boston University Paralegal Certificate and work your way into the legal field.  If you wanted to be an astronaut like me, consider the Project Management Certificate through Boston University Corporate Education Center or the Lean Six Sigma Certificate program through a leader in the aerospace industry, Purdue University.  If you wanted to be in the medical field, and you are an LPN/LVN or Paramedic now, we can help you become an RN and move up the ladder in your career.

So, if you think you're a grown up, but still have childhood dreams, feel free to contact us today and we'll be more than happy to help in assisting you toward your goals.

Nurse Earns Masters Degree Online

Friday, December 2, 2011 by TCN Success
"Online education makes returning to school more manageable. Make no mistake, online education is not easy. It requires commitment, motivation and self-discipline, and lots of hard work. The expectations of Regis University online students were the same as the graduate students on campus," Sheila Blackmur said of her experience earning her online Master of Science in Nursing degree with help from The College Network.

Sheila had a busy schedule that included working full time and taking care of her family. She was able to balance her education with her daily responsibilities thanks to all of the support she received from her family during her program. Sheila also felt very supported by other students who were enrolled in the same online program she was.

"I interacted with other students in every course I took, such as through group work and projects. We interacted via chat rooms, telephone conversation, email and discussion boards. It was very comforting to know that your classmates were experiencing some of the same happiness, stress and anxiety. It was also great to work with classmates from all over the United States," Sheila explained.

Project Management Certificate Improves Success

Friday, August 12, 2011 by TCN Success
“I've always had the desire for a career in project management and was presented a great opportunity to make that dream come true,“ Rosalyn Toliver says of her decision to earn her Foundations of Project Management Certificate, online, through the Boston University Corporate Education Center.

“I decided that a certificate in project management would at least provide me with the foundation I needed in order to increase my chances of success.” With the goal of earning a certificate in mind, an online program was important for Rosalyn in order to balance her work schedule with her courses.

“I decided to advance my education through The College Network™ based on the flexibility, financing options and provider affiliations,” explains Rosalyn. “What I liked most about the program is that it gave me the opportunity to learn on my own time and at my convenience.”

Single dad earns certificate in project management

Saturday, July 30, 2011 by TCN Success
Ken Sharp, a single dad with a full time career, knows the value of enhanced knowledge which is why he chose to get his Certificate in Project Management from Boston University Corporate Education Center (BUCEC) with help from The College Network. “I’ve been performing project and program management, then started to see customers indicate a preference for PMP certification in their requisitions to fill project management positions, especially on government contracts. I figured it was time,” Ken said of his decision.

Ken chose to pursue his certificate with help from BUCEC because of the prominent online presence of the company on technology jobs and professional networking web sites. He was especially pleased with the flexibility and outline of the courses. “I liked the bundled ten course curriculum I saw and flexibility of online classes. It was all one complete program. One complete curriculum, simplified,” Ken explained.

Red Light, Green Light

Friday, April 15, 2011 by Kevin Burton

Stop! Read this...Stop what you're doing!  Just like a game of red light, green light you may have played when you were a kid, lets take a moment to examine how putting off your College Network program of choice may be inhibiting you from achieving your goal(s).

Most people divide their goals into short- and long-term accomplishments.  While your big picture goal may be to get a promotion, a raise, or a job, the thing that will define your success is your work that you do right now.  Focus on the moment.  If the Lean Six Sigma Online program from Purdue is what will help you in your short-term and/or long-term success, why sacrifice pursuing it this moment and potentially damaging your ultimate goal?

Trust me, no one is perfect, and it is very easy to lose sight of focusing on the moment because you feel overwhelmed about the bigger picture.  But, The College Network offers you ample opportunities to pick up where you left off with our online education programs.  Some are truly self-paced, like our LPN to Associates RN Nursing program, and our courses for Project Management from Boston University Corporate Education Center.  Most others are asynchronous, where you do not have the pressure of having to be online at certain times.  Build upon your minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour, and day-by-day achievements. Before you know it, you'll complete your program and be well on your way to reaching your goal(s).
Let's go!!!

So what are you waiting for?  The light is green now, and you're free to start any College Network program.  Our programs offer you the flexibility to focus on the moment, and continue on your road to success by achieving your goals and furthering your education and career!

If you have any questions about any program offered by The College Network, please contact me, Kevin Burton, at kburton@collegenetwork.com or 1-800-307-1006 Ext. 4734.  I look forward to assisting you as move through your green light!

Resolution Revolution

Monday, January 3, 2011 by Kevin Burton
Revolutionary SoldierI do it.  She does it.  He does it.  They do it.  Almost everyone does it this time of year - New Year's Resolutions.  And just like me, you, and everyone else, we probably do not follow through with some or all of them.  Today, I propose we both turn over a new leaf, and take some advice from some of the best revolutionaries on creating your own revolution and change the way we think about achieving our goals.  Afterward, I'll tell you how using the advice you receive can help you achieve your goals through The College Network.

"Resolve to perform what you ought.  Perform without fail what you resolve."
- Benjamin Franklin, 1771

"Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him."
- Dwight D. Eisenhower

"Personal transformation can and does have global effects.  As we go, so goes the world, for the world is us.  The revolution that will save the world is ultimately a personal one."
- Marianne Williamson

And now for my favorite -

One of my favorite historical figures, Thomas Jefferson
"Determine never to be idle.  No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time, who never loses any.  It is wonderful how much may be done, if we are always doing."

- Thomas Jefferson, May 5, 1787

Improving your education is a goal most people need and want to achieve, but they are deterred by a lack of commitment and heavy procrastination.  The College Network works with leading universities to offer programs, including an Associates Degree in Nursing Online, a Lean Six Sigma Online program through Purdue University, and Courses for Project Management through Boston University Corporate Education Center, offer you the opportunity to be self-motivated and use your own time wisely to complete your education.  Don't take it from me, let's both create our Resolution Revolution with some words of wisdom from Thomas Jefferson - "It is wonderful how much may be done, if we are always doing."

Just Do It

Thursday, December 23, 2010 by Matthew Pinkston
I am sure most of us are familiar with the slogan "Just Do It®" used by Nike®.  But what exactly do they mean?  Of course Nike is closely related to the sporting world, however, I think their slogan and the message it portrays can be beneficial to everyone.

The first thing I think of when I hear "Just Do It®" is an athlete working hard; preparing to make him or herself better at their chosen sport.  Running that extra mile; shooting those extra foul shots; doing whatever it takes to get better; no excuses, "just do it®"!

How great could you be if you used this mentality in your life?

I speak to prospective students everyday and the two biggest obstacles keeping them from making the commitment and just doing it are:

              TIME and MONEY

Time  Money

Now both are legitimate excuses, but both are just that... excuses!  Time and money for the most part will always be hard to come by unless you hit the lottery or get a big inheritance.  All of us have busy lives, commitments, family, work, etc...   That is why The College Network and our partner universities' convenient online programs offer the best way for adults to go back to school.  The formats for all of the programs are asynchronous, which means that you can log in and work on the courses when you want. You only have to have the motivation to JUST DO IT!

Now the money issues are a bit different.  We do offer convenient payment schedules that will fit most budgets; however I, as well as anybody, know that times are tough and money is tight.  It is that rock and hard place analogy, where you want and need that Project Management Certificate, or want to start a new career as a Paralegal, but you just don't have the funds.  I also know that you can never get ahead by doing nothing.

So I ask anyone who is in this situation to take a look at your spending.  Do go out to eat a lot?  Starbucks?  I bet we can all find some luxury in our life that we can live without.  Now this does not need to be a permanent change, but cut back on these luxuries long enough to get those extra funds you need! Get that Nursing Degree and RN license or that Lean Six Sigma Certification which will lead to a better paying job and more security in the workplace.  Then you can eat out everyday and even buy your own Starbucks!

Get your better tomorrow started today and JUST DO IT!

Update Your Education With The College Network

Tuesday, December 7, 2010 by TCN Success
Gary Caudle was no stranger to the project management field, but when he and his employer decided it was time to update his formal knowledge of processes, they turned to The College Network for Boston University Corporate Education Center's project management courses.

“I looked at several course offerings and decided on the BUCEC set of courses because they covered all nine knowledge areas outlined in the Project Management Body of Knowledge. I began the program in February of 2010 and completed all ten courses in August of 2010. BUCEC answered any questions I had in a timely manner. The entire experience was very pleasing," Gary said.

No matter what your experience, it's never a bad idea to update your skills and education.

“This training and certification has given me and my organization some credentials that may aid in winning the next big client,” he said. “They add credibility to us as an organization.”

The Disconnect Between Doing A Job Well & Being Prepared to Succeed

Thursday, October 28, 2010 by Cory Eyler

Something I have noticed throughout my career is that in many organizations there is a disconnect between doing a job well and being prepared to succeed. This disconnect leads to frustration as employees, on every level including management, fail to meet the expectations passed down through the chain of command.

Having worked in the education industry for many years, I have been exposed to others' frustrations many times. A lot of the professionals who experienced frustration in the workplace did so because they failed to make the connection between their job and their ability to do that job. I am not talking about the simple day-to-day tasks but more so about the ability to take an assignment and turn it into a game changing success story

The College Network partners with major universities that are recognized for having some of the best college programs to offer busy adults with a variety of professional certificate programs in areas such as; Project Management, Lean Six Sigma, Paralegal, Human Resources, Leadership, and Food Service Management that can all be completed 100% online.

Most of the people we work with realize they have the ability to get the job done but fail to reach beyond the norm, because they don’t focus on professional development (i.e. themselves).

I would like to share a brief story that might help shed some light on what I am saying… In my story there are two people responsible for cutting wood (person A & person B). Over the course of a week the two wood cutters are being evaluated against each to see why there is a big discrepancy in their production. Their manager sends someone out to evaluate each wood cutter. The outcome of the evaluations is noted below:

Evaluation Person A: Person A works tirelessly throughout each day barely ever stopping to take breaks. Their hard work and dedication is the best I have seen and there is no way anyone could keep up!

Evaluation Person B: Person B was diligent and hard working but often stopped to take breaks. Person B had it down to a science but I fear their productivity will not be as good because they seemed to work a lot less.

The manager brings both of these people into the office to go over their evaluations and match them with overall productivity. As it turns out, person A was 30% less productive then person B and both the manager and person A were shocked at the results. Person A yelled out, “How could you cut more wood when you sat around taking breaks all day...” With a confused yet confident look person B replies by saying, “I wasn’t taking breaks; I was sharpening my saw!"

The moral of the story is that you can get ahead in your career and achieve amazing things but it takes more than just plain hard work.

If you are looking to move into a new industry or move up in your current industry then you should seriously consider seeking out professional development opportunities. Being committed to developing and/or diversifying your skill set (i.e. sharpening your saw) can help you achieve personal and professional satisfaction.

At The College Network, we specialize in helping busy adults achieve personal and professional satisfaction through education. If you’re looking for Paralegal training courses, a lean six sigma certification course, a PMP preparation course or other courses in project management, we can help.

The one thing I ask from the people we work with is that no matter what you do please don’t just do nothing. While there may never be a “good time” to take on more responsibility by getting started in a program, I can assure you that there will never be a “good time” to suffer the repercussions of not developing yourself when you had the chance.

Evolution

Thursday, October 21, 2010 by Stanley Dixon
I just updated my Adobe CS5 package this week. I was so happy when I saw the update for Dreamweaver included HTML5 extensions. HTML5 is the upcoming standard for web development. If you own an iPad, I am sure you're aware of HTML5. The major roadblock is that the amount of iPad users is so small, and most people do not have Internet browsers ready for HTML5.

Internet Explorer 9 for Windows is supposed to be ready for HTML5, but Internet Explorer 9 may not be available for WindowsXP users. In reality, HTML5 standards may not be written for another couple of years, but it is good to see that I have the ability to be ready for the future. I am excited to experiment with these new HTML5 extensions.

I have heard about test groups using iPads and Kindles in the classroom. And generally, these test groups have responded positively. With the upcoming releases of additional tablet-computers on the market, it is important for a designer, like me, to be ready for the future and not hold too tight to the past.

Personally, I see tablet computers being a big part of  education in the future and a tool for many industries. From Nurses to Project Managers, these highly mobile computers can be a great advance in the way we work.

We live in such a quickly changing world, I advise everyone to continue learning and to be ready for the future. At The College Network, we offer online degrees and certificates from our various partner universities for those people who are looking to continue their education. And since The College Network and its partners allow you to take the courses online it puts you in a perfect position to be ready for the future, not to mention to make better money.

The Answer to an Empty Career

Monday, October 11, 2010 by Stefanie Kinsey

Not being fulfilled in your career can lead to problems that show up in other areas of your life. We spend the majority of our lives at work, and a significant amount of that time spent being unhappy can lead to a short temper away from work. Or it can result  in a short wave of anxiety on Sunday night when you think of work on Monday morning. It manifests in a variety of ways, even if it’s just an overall feeling of exhaustion.

Certifications and degrees from The College Network's partner universities can counter the emptiness of being unfulfilled. There are a variety of options from Project Management Professional® preparation courses, LPN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs, and online paralegal certificate programs. A certification or degree provides achievement, recognition, and community. In effect, an overall feeling of serenity.

Serenity at Sunset

The designation change provided from a certification/degree is a reward for success. One example of a designation change that can be obtained through online classes for nursing is an LVN to RN program. The designation is more than just letters. It signifies to others that you can demonstrate the skills needed in that particular field. It is an achievement that you can proudly display in your home or office and on your resume.

According to the TechRepublic 2010 IT skills and Salary Report , the PMP Project Management Professional certification can lead to salary increases of 26 percent in the U.S. when compared to those without the certification. And according to PayScale.com, an LVN’s salary can increase as much as 27 percent to 29 percent when certified as a Registered Nurse. Salary is one type of recognition that an individual earns when they obtain a certification or degree.

One of the most valuable aspects is the community an individual belongs to once a certification and/or degree is obtained. The community can provide a wealth of resources: encouragement, career suggestions, access to jobs, and growth opportunities are just some of the things the community of an individual’s certification and degree can provide.

A certification/degree may be the answer to a feeling of lack of fulfillment. It provides achievement, recognition, and community.

Back To The Future ----->

Tuesday, October 5, 2010 by Lawrence Bowlin
Imagine for a moment that in your driveway you have a time machine.  Let's say a DeLorean and you are going to play the part of Marty McFly.  You have the ability to load the plutonium into the machine, and set your Flux Capacitor to anytime in the past.  Where would you go?  Would you go back and change decisions you've made?  Correct mistakes or leave them as they are?  For me personally, I would go back and tell myself that mullets are NOT the next great hair style and parachute pants are just a fad!

Now let's put this question into the context of your career.  Would you follow the same path or would you change it?  A person once quoted "if you do something you love, you'll never work a day in your life".  Does your career fulfill you emotionally, financially and even spiritually?  Do you get that sense of satisfaction each morning knowing you are going to work in a career that you love?  Take a moment, and do your own personal "career inventory" and ask yourself that very question.  "Am I happy?"  If your answer is no, what's holding you back?  The answer is simple.  You are the culprit.  You are holding you back.

Everyday I talk to people who have done their own "inventory" and want to change the future by working in the present.  Project Managers who see the increasing need for the PMP credential and want to enroll in a 100% online, self -paced Certificate of Project Management program and take advantage of PMP Preparation Courses.

People stuck in unfulfilling menial jobs, who see the value of the online Paralegal Certificate program from Boston University.  In 14 weeks, they can completely change their lives.

Or those people who see what an education in Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Lean Six Sigma Black Belt from Purdue University can do for their resume and marketable skills.

How about a certificate from an Ivy League institution like eCornell in Human Resources or Business Leadership?

LPNs / LVNs who want to earn more money by working for their Associates Degree or Bachelors Degree in Nursing Online.  And the beauty of it all is you do all this without getting into your Time Machine, but do it from home right now.  Online degrees from leading universities in the comfort of home.

Who needs the DeLorean?  You only need desire to get moving.  Call me and I'll show you how to get up to 88 m.p.h and generate that 1.21 gigawatts to have YOUR future now with The College Network.

How Has Health Care Changed Already?

Monday, September 27, 2010 by College Network
Since the Affordable Care Act was passed in March of this year there have already been several changes that have taken place. Last week I talked about changes that went into effect on September 23. Here is the list of changes that had already been made since the law was passed.

January 1, 2010: Providing Small Business Health Insurance Tax Credits. Up to 4 million small businesses are eligible for tax credits to help them provide insurance benefits to their workers. The first phase of this provision provides a credit worth up to 35% of the employer’s contribution to the employees’ health insurance. Small non-profit organizations may receive up to a 25% credit.

April 1, 2010: Allowing States to Cover More People on Medicaid. States will be able to receive federal matching funds for covering some additional low-income individuals and families under Medicaid for whom federal funds were not previously available. This will make it easier for states that choose to do so to cover more of their residents.

June, 2010: Relief for Four Million Seniors Who Hit the Medicare Prescription Drug "Donut Hole". An estimated 4 million seniors will reach the gap in Medicare prescription drug coverage known as the “donut hole” this year. Each senior will receive a $250 rebate.

Effective Now: Cracking Down on Health Care Fraud. Current efforts to fight fraud have returned more than $2.5 billion to the Medicare Trust Fund in FY 2009 alone. The new law invests new resources and requires new screening procedures for health care providers to boost these efforts and reduce fraud and waste in Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP.

June 1, 2010: Expanding Coverage for Early Retirees. Too often, Americans who retire without employer-sponsored insurance and before they are eligible for Medicare see their life savings disappear because of high rates in the individual market. To preserve employer coverage for early retirees until more affordable coverage is available through the new Exchanges by 2014, the new law creates a $5 billion program to provide needed financial help for employment-based plans to continue to provide valuable coverage to people who retire between the ages of 55 and 65, as well as their spouses and dependents. For more information on the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program, visit www.ERRP.gov

July 1, 2010: Providing Access to Insurance for Uninsured Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions. A Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan will provide new coverage options to individuals who have been uninsured for at least six months because of a pre-existing condition. States have the option of running this new program in their state. If a state chooses not to do so, a plan will be established by the Department of Health and Human Services in that state. This program serves as a bridge to 2014, when all discrimination against pre-existing conditions will be prohibited. Learn more about the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan.

July 1, 2010: Putting Information Online. The law provides for an easy-to-use website where consumers can compare health insurance coverage options and pick the coverage that works for them.

Keep following my blog to make sure you're kept informed of the changes!

Student with Two Certifications Earns Third in Project Management

Wednesday, September 22, 2010 by College Network

Shawn Camp knows a thing or two about becoming certified in his field. He already has his Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and his Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) certificates. “I have a bachelor’s in computer information,” Shawn said. “I wanted to earn my Certificate in Project Management because that certification places you in the middle of everything that a corporation wants in an employee.”

Because he’s originally from Boston, Mass., Shawn found the opportunity to earn his Project Management Certificate from Boston University Corporate Education Center very enticing. The fact that he could earn the certificate completely online also caught his interest. “The nearest school to me that offers this program is four hours away. Online education was just a much better option for me in this case,” Shawn said.

With all the education that Shawn continues to accumulate, he hopes to one day be a network administrator or to be able to run his own computer firm. “I’m really excited to just get this experience and move on from there. I want to see where it takes me,” he said. “This certificate shows your willingness to learn, your ability to take on more responsibilities, adds more weight to your resume and, in some cases, even gets your foot in the door.”

Coming from a technology background, Shawn knows the importance of keeping up with trends in today’s highly technical world. “Technology changes every six months,” Shawn said. “If you can keep up with everything that’s changing in today’s world, you’ll be all the more valuable to employers.”

Immunity Idol

Jeff Probst of SurvivorImmunity is back up for grabs!  Just like on the hit reality TV show Survivor you too have a chance at achieving something to help save yourself from elimination.  The College Network offers you lots of options to help yourself rise to the top of whatever "game" (career path) you are in.

Although myself or The College Network can never guarantee you a job or keeping your job (that's up to you), we can certainly assist you in gaining more knowledge and credentials to give yourself the best shot of having immunity in the future eliminations and challenges in your career field.  Think of our Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and Black Belt from Purdue University as immunity necklaces to help you stave off elimination from your current job - or maybe they are the clue you need to perform better in future challenges or work projects.  Perhaps you need Paralegal Training Courses and a Certificate from Boston University in order to get your foot in the door and achieve immunity for the first time to get yourself back in the game.

Immunity IdolEither way, the closer you are to immunity, the better off you are in staying above the competition, performing better, and eventually becoming the "sole survivor."  What program can help you gain your own immunity idol?  Call me at The College Network and I will help you avoid those words: "the tribe has spoken."
